The practice

What is Mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates is Pilates taught on the floor, using your own body weight for resistance, sometimes with small props such as bands, circles or poles. Without a machine to support you, the work asks more of your core, your balance and your awareness of how you move, which is why it remains the foundation of a Pilates practice.

It is far from a single type of class. A Mat session might be a slow, careful introduction to the principles, a flowing full-body sequence, or a specialist class built around a healthy back, pregnancy, teens or later life. The exercises are chosen for the people in the room, so two Mat classes can feel very different depending on where you are starting from.

Our Mat studio will be a calm, light-filled room with everything you need provided, so you can arrive as you are and simply move.

What a class looks like

Easy to start, and simple to settle into.

Every Mat class at Vida follows the same calm shape, so you always know what to expect, whether it is your very first session or your hundredth.

01

A proper welcome

Your first class begins with a conversation. We ask about your history, any aches or injuries and what you'd like to achieve, so the teaching is tailored from the very start.

02

Clear, unhurried instruction

Your teacher demonstrates each movement, explains what to focus on and watches how you move, offering gentle adjustments and simpler options as you go. You are never left to guess.

03

A balanced session

Classes flow through warm-up, core and strength work, and mobility, finishing with a few minutes to breathe and settle. You should leave feeling taller, steadier and calm.

04

Progress at your pace

As your confidence grows, your teacher will suggest the next step, whether that is a new exercise, a deeper variation or a different class. You decide when you are ready.

Why people love it

The benefits of Mat Pilates.

Builds a strong centre

Mat work asks your core to do the supporting, which builds deep, functional strength you feel in everyday movement, from carrying shopping to lifting a child.

Nothing to learn first

There is no equipment to set up or adjust, so you can walk in and begin. That makes Mat Pilates a gentle, approachable place to start if Pilates is new to you.

Improves posture and mobility

The focus on alignment, control and breath helps release stiff areas and restore ease through your spine, shoulders and hips.

Adapts to you

Every exercise can be made easier or more demanding, so Mat Pilates suits complete beginners, during pregnancy, in later life or when returning to movement after a break.

Travels well

Once you know the basics, your practice can continue anywhere with a little floor space, which makes the habit easier to keep between classes.

Calms the mind

Concentrating on breath and precise movement quietens a busy mind. Most people leave a class feeling clearer and more settled than when they arrived.
